Some of our customers comments –
My wife and I visited Orkney in June and Kinlay Francis (the proprietor of Orkney Uncovered) escorted us around this fabulous island for two days. Not an inexpensive tour but just wonderful with personal service and attention to local history. Kinlay had submitted to us in Australia some months prior an outline of what he thought may be of interest to us, and as we toured the various attractions, he delved deeper into our interests and amended the sights (and sites) we visited so that we gained maximum satisfaction. What a great human being, with his own deep interest in local history and also WW2 history. This was just an all-round sensational experience and we would love to return to Orkney to have Kinlay show us more.
Great Trip out to Yesnaby
This October I took a trip out to Yesnaby to see the Broch of Borwick and some wartime remains with Orkney Uncovered tour guide Kinlay Francis. His knowledge was beyond anything I’d ever heard about these places which made the trip a very memorable one. Will no doubtably be using Orkney Uncovered many times to come, certainly the place to go if in need of information!
Ultimate Way to See Orkney
Thanks to Rick Steve’s Scotland, we learned about Orkney Uncovered and added a trip to Orkney to our Scotland visit. What an amazing tour provided by Kinlay! He is extremely knowledgeable about the sites, which is as important as getting to them. I hope I can back to Orkney one of these days, and if I do I will take the tour with Kinlay and Kirsty again. Highly, highly recommended!
A perfect tour!
Perfect tour! Our guide Kinlay, was very knowledgeable about the many ancient sites around the Orkneys and was able to provide a great deal of background info about these sites. Before the trip we did a lot of research on what to visit and we were able to work with Kinlay to create an ideal personalized schedule. Additionally, the tour vehicle (a mini bus or van) was very clean and comfortable. We look forward to visiting the Orkneys again and hope to use Orkney Uncovered again.
5 Stars + !
Kinley picked our group at 9am at our B&B in Kirkwall. We had arranged a bespoke tour and outlined the plans for our day and away we went. It quickly became apparent that he loves his home in Orkney, and is passionate about the enviromental concerns. His love of history specifically military history quickly became apparent. His in depth knowledge of the area, its history and people is extensive. He is exuberant and his passion is infectious. We visited the Ring of Brodgar, Stenness, Broch of Borwick, Skara Brae, Meshowe, and Evie. It is apparent that Kinley loves to share his home with you.
If we ever have the opportunity to visit the Orkeny Islands again, I would want Kinley as our personal guide. He is brilliant with a sense of humor to boot!
Our tour guide was Kinley Francis and this was really a great day for us. This is his homeland and he is rightly proud of it, enthusiastic and very knowledgeable about the history and many historical sites and artifacts. He skillfully organized things so the we avoided busloads of tourists from the two ships that were there at the time. We actually had the Ring of Brodgar to ourselves !!! The places we visited include Skara Brae, Dun Beag, Unstan Chambered Cairn, Ring of Brodgar, Orphir Earl’s Bu, several of Churchill’s barriers for German submarines and adjacent pillboxes, the Italian Chapel, St.Magnus Cathedral (you don’t want to miss the Cathedral) and Rennibister Earth House. My brother and I spent a little over three weeks on private tours of Ireland, England, Wales and Scotland and this was one of our very best days. If you enjoy history and seeing beautiful scenery with a friendly knowledgeable guide we highly recomment this tour with Mr.Francis.
A Wealth of Knowledge
Visiting Orkney for the first time so we were unsure what was worth seeing so decided to have a couple of days with a guide. We were so lucky to be able to have Orkney Uncovered with Kinlay Francis. His computer like knowledge of both the Neolithic and Military history was outstanding. can’t imagine seeing as much as we did if we’d been on our own. He also pointed out things not to bother seeing on our days exploring on our own – Just Outstanding- Thank you so much.
Orkney in depth
You haven’t seen Orkney until you have seen it with Kinlay. The untold history, the less trodden path, the hidden sights both man made and natural, Kinlay covers it all. I cannot recommend his tours highly enough. Whatever the weather, and Orkney has some weather, this gentle giant will take you though 5000 years of history and show you how these beautiful small islands have shaped British history. History at school was never this good or this exciting.
Marvellous visit to Hoy
This was my fourth visit to Hoy with Orkney Uncovered and each time I discover something new, as well as visiting old favourites. Many thanks to Kinlay for taking me to the Hoy Kirk to show me the exhibition on Sir Peter Maxwell Davies (which I didn’t know about) as well as for introducing me to Emily’s fantastic 1940s themed tea room and shop with its amazing views. Great to be able to see the museum again before renovations begin (it’ll be open again in 2018). Kinlay’s knowledge, dedication and warm welcome are second to none. Thank you so much Orkney Uncovered, for another unforgettable trip.
Fantastic Tour Off the Beaten Path
My wife and I organised a tour as part of our Honeymoon.
Kinlay arrived on time at our hotel and chatted with us about the day. We suggested we would be happy to miss out one item of the itinerary and suggested we would be happy to see a few sites that require a little walking to get to.
In addition to the regular tour highlights Kinlay took us up to and into one of the less visited burial mounds as well as an iron age Broch, followed by pointing out some fossils in the surrounding area.
I couldn’t recommend the tour highly enough. A must do in Orkney.
