Some of our customers comments –
Orkney in depth
You haven’t seen Orkney until you have seen it with Kinlay. The untold history, the less trodden path, the hidden sights both man made and natural, Kinlay covers it all. I cannot recommend his tours highly enough. Whatever the weather, and Orkney has some weather, this gentle giant will take you though 5000 years of history and show you how these beautiful small islands have shaped British history. History at school was never this good or this exciting.
Marvellous visit to Hoy
This was my fourth visit to Hoy with Orkney Uncovered and each time I discover something new, as well as visiting old favourites. Many thanks to Kinlay for taking me to the Hoy Kirk to show me the exhibition on Sir Peter Maxwell Davies (which I didn’t know about) as well as for introducing me to Emily’s fantastic 1940s themed tea room and shop with its amazing views. Great to be able to see the museum again before renovations begin (it’ll be open again in 2018). Kinlay’s knowledge, dedication and warm welcome are second to none. Thank you so much Orkney Uncovered, for another unforgettable trip.
Fantastic Tour Off the Beaten Path
My wife and I organised a tour as part of our Honeymoon.
Kinlay arrived on time at our hotel and chatted with us about the day. We suggested we would be happy to miss out one item of the itinerary and suggested we would be happy to see a few sites that require a little walking to get to.
In addition to the regular tour highlights Kinlay took us up to and into one of the less visited burial mounds as well as an iron age Broch, followed by pointing out some fossils in the surrounding area.
I couldn’t recommend the tour highly enough. A must do in Orkney.
The best way to get the most of Orkney
I spent five days with Kinlay in August. He is a native of Orkney and extremely knowledgeable about all things Orkney, from archaeology to military history to local flora and fauna. He took me on hikes to sites not on the usual tourist trips. I could not have done them without his encouragement and support. He is great company. The trip more than met my expectations. I’m already planning another trip and will definitely seek Kinlay’s guidance again. Kirstey was also a great help with emails as I made my plans and then had to make changes on the way.
An excellent guide
Our trip to Orkney was made memorable by having Kinlay Francis of ‘Orkney Uncovered’ as our guide. He delivered a first class service. We were taken to the major archaeological and historical sites in style. Kinlay delivered his encyclopedic knowledge with charm, humour and conviction. He is an expert on pre-history and military history. We had both the comfort of his excellent conveyance and the opportunity to stretch our legs in the big outdoors. KInlay made Orkney come alive. His attention to detail was admirable. We would recommend him unreservedly.
One more excellent visit to Orkney
Planning 5 days in Orkney for a group of 40 passengers in the middle of the summer is not the easiest thing to do! But Kirsty and Kinlay at Orkney Uncovered did a perfect job again! It was a real pleasure working with them, sending emails back and forth, finding the best solutions, booking lunches, splitting the group for the most difficult part of the program etc.
And – of course – Kinlay was our guide for most of the tours with his knowledge and humor. I have met good tour guides in different countries, but he is simply one of the very best!
We had two days with Kinlay and could not ask for better. Everything said in other reviews is accurate. We like to walk and he adapted on the fly to build in lots of walking time, adapted the stops to our interests, did a great job of working around the cruise ship groups that were there and had some lovely stories to tell along the way. You’ll need to book early as he is, needless to say, very much in demand. And deserves to be.
Scapa Flow tour every Tuesday
Absolutely excellent tour of the Scapa Flow site every Tuesday. So well put together and led. Really took me back to times 5 years before I was born when my 18 year old Irish Dad would have been there serving on his destroyer the HMS Myngs whilst waiting for the next transaltlantic convoy that they would escort to Murmansk or Archangel.
A “Must do” when visiting Orkney!
Our day spent with Kinaly Francis was simply second to non.
His knowledge was broad, deep and very impressive – a true professional in Wartime and Ancient Orkney. He is also a historian for the Royal Naval Association in Orkney, so not surprisingly had many, many interesting stories. As an Orcadian his local knowledge and recommendations were excellent too.
Friends have already booked with him for 2017……I recommend you do too! You cannot be disappointed.
We were four friends (from Sweden) seeing Orkney with Kinlay Francis, on a fine day in September. His wife Kirsty was very helpful in arranging the tour months in advance. The highlight for me personally was a short walk on the cliffs at Yeasnaby – striking scenery. Besides being skilled in everything concerning Orkney, he makes you feel like friends in no time and was also keen to adjust the tour according to our wishes. Even went out of his way to find me a flagpole size Orkney flag:)
