Fascinating glimpse of Orkney history during two world wars
We ( myself and my husband) booked Kinlay our expert guide for two days with an emphasis on the role of Royal Engineers in World War 2. My father was based on Orkney during WW2 in RE Bomb Disposal.
What a fascinating and informative two days we had with Kinlay who has planned a bespoke programme of visits for us. His knowledge of both wars and related aspects was very impressive indeed. Clearly passionate about his subject, he achieved the perfect balance between the factual and the more human aspects of the impact of war on the Orkneys and its people. He was a considerate and very polite host who went the extra mile to ensure that everything was as perfect as could be and all our needs were catered for. He carried an extensive photographic and background archive with him and was able to give comprehensive advice about other tourist aspects of the Orkney Isles. Kinlay was a. Wry personable guide and we really enjoyed his company over the two days. Although we are all tempted to explore for ourselves as tourists, the knowledge that Kinlay gave us really helped us with the rest of our self guided tour, giving us a real insight and feel for the Orkneys. We would highly recommend Orkney Uncovered as a way to truly enhance your stay on Orkney and to give you a special and valuable insight into this very special place.
We know that Kinlay also covers prehistoric and walking tours and we would love to return to do these in the future, confident in the knowledge that we were in expert hands.

My 95 year old dad’s visit to Hoy
In April, my dad made his first visit to Orkney and stayed with us on mainland. With his own wartime experiences and his dad’s First World War experiences, dad has done considerable research on both topics and published a book on his father’s experiences. He was very keen to visit Lyness and see the naval defences. Kinlay collected him from our house and took him on the ferry and he had a wonderful day. He saw everything he had wanted to see and learnt so much and Kinlay was very attentive to his personal needs and comfort. He returned in the afternoon, absolutely thrilled with the whole experience. He has since described his day wth Kinlay as the highlight of his visit to Orkney.
Top class guide
Kinlay is a first rate guide — knowledgeable, friendly and considerate to the needs of his clients. Door to door service and offered water and a snack to keep us going on our wartime trip to Flotta. Our party of four loved every minute of our trip. Extra thank you to Kinlay for getting our visit to Flotta and Golta through security at the oil terminal. Will definitely use Orkney Uncovered again and have just organised a return trip for Battle of Jutland centenary.
Best of the Best!
This is an amazing touring experience. If you are looking for the ultimate Orkney islands outdoor adventure then do book with Orkney Uncovered. Kinlay our guide and his wife Kirsty provided us with so much amazing information on all things Orkney, we were left feeling exhilarated and eager to return to Orkney to discover more amazing sites.
We particularly loved visiting the stone circles and the lovely harbour town of Stromness. We thoroughly enjoyed hearing about the Scapa Flow world war base and the many interesting anecdotes from wartime Orkney. We had some superb outdoor hill walks and visited the Yesnaby castle.
We can see why they are highly rated as we not only had a wonderful private tour but had a luxurious touring vehicle and various delicious Orkney snacks and ice cold bottled mineral water.
We booked well in advance for our private tour with Kinlay and we would highly recommend that you if you are looking for an amazing private guided tour with with Orkney Uncovered.
Thank you Kinlay and Kirsty for all our attention to detail and a superb tour we loved it and will be back.
Wonderful Day Discovering Orkeny
This was a one-day port stop on our recent cruise, so we wanted to experience as much of the island as we could – Orkney Uncovered was the perfect choice. It ended up that four couples on our cruise ship booked the tour. Kinlay was prompt in picking us up and carefully watched our return time. He made sure we saw everything we wanted in the time we had and went out of his way to help one couple find a particular jewelry shop and took some others to a book store to purchase some books he mentioned. He even arranged for the weather to be perfect although I don’t think he can always guarantee that!! The time flew by and I would not hesitate to highly recommend Orkney Uncovered.
Superb Orkney Experience
I would highly recommend Kinlay, our guide with Orkney Uncovered, to anyone visiting Orkney. The five days we spent with Kinlay were exactly what we wanted. He tailor-made the itinerary to fit our interests in such a way that each day was unique, varied and endlessly fascinating. Kinlay is attentive to the needs of his guests, highly organised – whilst remaining flexible and adapting to the conditions and circumstances in the moment. He is clearly passionate about his work, is very interesting to listen to, incredibly knowledgeable about the life, history and natural environment of Orkney as well as being incredibly adept at knowing the right time to visit places so that we often had a location to ourselves.
I cannot recommend Orkney Uncovered highly enough.
We arranged a private tour for Kinlay Francis to show just the two of us around the various sites. He was excellent – very, very informed and knowledgeable, a lot of fun to be with and obviously passionate about the place. We had an excellent day. The weather varied between appalling (strong winds and hail) and sunshine (usually all within 15 minutes) but we had great fun and we’d recommend Kinlay as a guide to anyone wanting to learn about the history of Orkney.
A prize worth waiting for
A tour of wartime Hoy and part of the Orkney Mainland, won as a prize on Facebook, was a superb experience with Orkney Uncovered. Kinlay, as guide, driver and supplier of tea and biscuits was a delightful CO. He deepened our superficial knowledge of wartime Orkney as he uncovered the hidden gems with great enthusiasm. Highly recommended.
Inspired and fascinating tour of Orkney
Orkney Uncovered was the perfect introduction to our first tour of Orkney. My wife and I, with another couple, were met off our boat by Kinlay who, during the course of a day, took us to all the principal sights of these fascinating islands. Kinlay was an excellent host (and good driver) being knowledgeable, charming and passionate about the sights we saw. The tour, like the light lunch that was presented, certainly whetted our appetites for a return to the islands again. The mind blowing highlight was Skara Brae that was a community of dwellings constructed 3100 BC….older than the pyramids. A special tour.
‘Refreshing’ private tour of Orkney.
Orkney’s mainland. Our guide was excellent and showed us around our sites on a beautifully sunny and refreshingly brisk Orkney day.
I have to say we were suprosed at how lovely Orkney is in the winter months. We spotted seals basking in the shoreline as well as a number of sea birds keeping sheltered along the cliffs. We thoroughly enjoyed out walk out to the causeway island called the Brough of Birsay and we walked up to a lighthouse to see spectacular views over the North Atlantic.
Our guide showed us how the Vikings used to live and various other nordic locations on Orkney including the Orphir Bu.
We loved seeing the stones circles and going through a walk through the scenic fishing town of Stromness.
Overall a fantastic tour for two, highly recommended to everyone wanting to get plenty of fresh air and see some history along the way.
“Wow! Outstanding Tour!!
We booked Orkney Uncovered for a private tour back in September. We had wanted to see the best Orkney has to offer in a day. The owners Kinlay and Kirsty gave us a couple of wonderful tour itineraries.
We ended up choosing an itinerary to cover ancient and wartime sites. We were picked up off our ship and went on a journey of discovery around Orkney. We visited a number of interesting Neolithic sites including Skara Brae, Cuween Tomb and Ring of Brodgar. We visited some WW2 gun batteries, an airfield used by Hawker Hurricanes in WW2 and the Churchill Barriers with Italian Chapel. Our guide Kinlay gave us a great tour and his knowledge about the local history past and present was amazing.
We even stopped for some Orkney ice cream which was delicious. Kinlay recommended the lemon curd flavour, it was superb!
We see that you need to spend more than one day on Orkney as it is a large island with so much history. We will definitely be back and booking with Orkney Uncovered to explore more of Orkney!
