A “Must do” when visiting Orkney!

Our day spent with Kinaly Francis was simply second to non.

His knowledge was broad, deep and very impressive – a true professional in Wartime and Ancient Orkney. He is also a historian for the Royal Naval Association in Orkney, so not surprisingly had many, many interesting stories. As an Orcadian his local knowledge and recommendations were excellent too.

Friends have already booked with him for 2017……I recommend you do too! You cannot be disappointed.

Great Tour!

We were four friends (from Sweden) seeing Orkney with Kinlay Francis, on a fine day in September. His wife Kirsty was very helpful in arranging the tour months in advance. The highlight for me personally was a short walk on the cliffs at Yeasnaby – striking scenery. Besides being skilled in everything concerning Orkney, he makes you feel like friends in no time and was also keen to adjust the tour according to our wishes. Even went out of his way to find me a flagpole size Orkney flag:)

Friendly, Knowlegable, Fun and Personalized

This was the most in depth tour we’ve ever experienced. Kinlay picked us up at our B&B at 9:00 and drove us to a number of fantastic sights around Orkney. We saw the Brough of Birsay, the Broch of Gurness, Skara Brae, Yesnaby (including Yesnaby Castle, an amazing sea stack the likes of nothing I’ve ever seen), the Ring of Brodgar, the Standing Stones of Stenness and much more. Kinlay’s intimate knowledge of the area allowed him to give us fantastic insight into the locations. In addition his sense of timing was unsurpassed as we got to see most of these sights when there was virtually nobody else there despite busloads of other folks leaving as we got to them or arriving as we departed. It was a truly magical day and when he dropped us off again around 5:00 we were completely swept up in the magic of the day.

You MUST tour with Kinlay!

First, you MUST visit Orkney. It’s small, but bountiful both in terms of experiences and the people.
My wife and I had one of the best travel experiences we’ve had because of Kinlay @ Orkney Uncovered. We spent 3 days with Kinlay, focused on the Ancient aspects of Orkney, hiking in the most amazing outdoor places and some modern military history for good measure.

We knew going to Orkney would require context, and to truly appreciate it we would need a guide. Kinlay did not disappoint, he is a true storyteller. At times Kinlay’s commentary ‘put you there’. The sheer scale of ‘time’ found in Orkney was incredible, from fossils and geologic formations 400 million years old, to 5500 year old human structures, to relics of modern wars.
Dress for the weather. We were lucky, we didn’t experience the Orkney wind, or any significant rain. Recommend layers, and a waterproof outer covering head to toe just in case. We were very comfortable the whole time because we dressed properly.
Visit multiple islands. We did Mainland, Rousey and Hoy, each had their own amazing stories to tell. We wished we had time to do more (there’s over 20 inhabited!).

Kinlay is a legend, make sure you book your tours with him, he won’t disappoint.

Don’t miss an opportunity to tour with Kinlay!

I unreservedly recommend Kinlay Francis and Orkney Uncovered. My recent tour with Kinlay wildly exceeded my already high expectations (I had read the Trip Advisor comments!). My custom tour was executed flawlessly and became the highlight of my entire two weeks in Scotland. Kinlay is not only totally professional and extremely knowledgable but also very personable and lots of fun to spend a day with. Arranging my tour through Kirsty was a breeze, and the Orkney Uncovered van was very comfortable. I have total confidence that I bought myself the best Orkney experience possible. If you are going to the Orkney Islands, please consider booking a tour with Kinlay.

5000 years of History

My wife and I booked Kinlay for a private day trip to show us the amazing historical remains on Mainland Orkney, whist we were there for a short break. Quite simply a superb day which fulfilled all our hopes.

Kinlay is so knowledgeable and friendly that I have no hesitation in recommending him to show you this fabulous island.

An incredible learning adventure!

Kinlay was incredibly knowledgable and flexible during our family one-day tour on Orkney. Our group included two seniors and two 20-year olds and we all felt that we received the best learning experience we could hope for. Due to weather Kinlay made a few modifications to our itinerary which was very helpful and he even went off the beaten path with us to a brewery and distillery. Having Kinlay walk us around the island’s sites, many of which don’t have accompanying museums or plaques, was very helpful. Without Kinlay we would have not appreciated all that Orkney offered our history-buff family.

By the end of the day Kinlay felt like a part of our family. Thank you, Kinlay — we will be back soon!

Kinlay the Ultimate Professional

I don’t normally write reviews but I thought that, this time and on this occasion I would write a review on what was an amazing insiders view of the Orkneys.

We booked with Orkney Uncovered to discover the our ancestors after reading such great reviews. We were very impressed at the amount of effort Kinlay and his wife Kirsty went to, to help my wife discover her Scottish roots.

Kinlay is the ultimate professional and its clear why he is excellent at what he does. So refined and flexible with tweaks and tour changes which we gave him quite a lot! (sorry Kinlay). His knowledge about all things Orkney is eclectic and he has a real passion for bringing the wonderful history to life.

Amazing and we would recommend booking in advance, its clear why Orkney uncovered is very popular.

Most rewarding, fascinating, thrilling experience!

How could any experience possibly top my first trip with Orkney Uncovered last year? It shouldn’t have been possible. Yet this year Kinley and Kirsti managed just that.

Guests are taken care of every step of the way. The van is comfortable and clean with wonderful visibility and a great sound system so you miss nothing, regardless of where you sit. Each excursion is carefully planned and organized so no detail goes overlooked–without sacrificing any adaptability.

There is no one better than Kinley as a guide. He is the ultimate professional who ensures every client gets the most out of the trip. We had a group with varying interests, ages, and physical abilities–and each and every one of us cannot stop raving about our wonderful experience.

Kinley has an encyclopedic knowledge of the Orkneys, a weapons grade wit, and a passion for the islands that’s contagious.

This is one trip that should be on everyone’s bucket list!

One really excellent day out.

If you want to see Orkney and learn about the Island and the people, then Kinley is your man. A fount of knowledge, immensely personable, and a proper fun guy to spend time with. Thoroughly recommended and great value for money. Tailor your own trip or leave it all to Kinley – you will not go far wrong.

This was our first visit to Orkney, and if we ever make it back, we will book him again, as there is plenty more yet to see.

“Wow! Outstanding Tour!!

We booked Orkney Uncovered for a private tour back in September. We had wanted to see the best Orkney has to offer in a day. The owners Kinlay and Kirsty gave us a couple of wonderful tour itineraries.

We ended up choosing an itinerary to cover ancient and wartime sites. We were picked up off our ship and went on a journey of discovery around Orkney. We visited a number of interesting Neolithic sites including Skara Brae, Cuween Tomb and Ring of Brodgar. We visited some WW2 gun batteries, an airfield used by Hawker Hurricanes in WW2 and the Churchill Barriers with Italian Chapel. Our guide Kinlay gave us a great tour and his knowledge about the local history past and present was amazing.

We even stopped for some Orkney ice cream which was delicious. Kinlay recommended the lemon curd flavour, it was superb!

We see that you need to spend more than one day on Orkney as it is a large island with so much history. We will definitely be back and booking with Orkney Uncovered to explore more of Orkney!
